Higher Lodge Description

Higher Lodge details

A listed, thatched, cob cottage, the site of which dates back to the early 17th century and which was once the gate house to the historic Cockington Estate. The Estate is featured on the Agatha Christie Literary Trail as the celebrated crime writer regularly visited in her youth and dedicated her book “Why didn’t they ask Evans?” to the former owners.

The unique, timbered property is nestled in the corner of the 460 acre country park, which is a designated wildlife site, and overlooks the Estate’s cricket grounds and arboretum. Guests at the property have access to the park at all times and can wander through the apple orchard, feed the ornamental carp at the lakes of the ancient monastery, visit the Norman church, explore the manor house and its gardens or watch an afternoon cricket match during the summer months. The outbuildings of the manor house contain an acclaimed craft centre where all year round local tradespeople are engaged in glassblowing, ironmongery, painting and chocolate making with their unique wares on sale. To the east of Cockington lies the seafront, about half a mile’s walk away across the countryside.

Cockington itself is an ancient fishing and farming village in a small valley and is estimated to be around 2500 years old. Visitors will find within a short walk of the property charming tea houses, small local shops and a large ale house designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. These are all scattered among numerous old thatched houses and medieval remains, making Cockington one of the most beautiful and most photographed villages in England. A visit to Cockington is a step back in time.

Lovers of Agatha Christie’s work will enjoy the fascinating garden of potent plants at Torre Abbey and her estate at Greenway. Torquay, Paignton and Brixham with their bustling ports, fishing boats, beaches, coastal walks and many restaurants are all very close by, as is all the beauty of Dartmoor. There are festivals to enjoy all year round, including the world famous Agatha Christie celebration in September.
