There are fabulous beaches to discover, from the flat, golden sands at Bigbury-on-Sea and Thurlestone, to the wooded suntrap of Blackpool Sands, or Slapton Sands whose 2 mile beach was used as a training ground for the Normandy invasion and is today backed by freshwater lagoons full of rare marsh birds. Delightful seaside towns are within easy reach too Kingsbridge is perfect for market browsing, Salcombe is a popular sailing centre, and Dartmouth is a bustling fishing port with a distinctive waterfront and an abundance of interesting shops, restaurants and watering holes. From the town, visitors can take a river cruise up the Dart to Totnes (1 hours each way) to explore its quaint narrow streets and quirky independent shops.Devon's soft warm climate has helped the creation of some outstandingly lovely gardens to visit including Overbecks and Greenway Gardens, both in the care of the National Trust. Countryside and coastal pathways provide delightful walking, whilst to the north lies the dramatic, rugged beauty of Dartmoor one of England's finest national parks, full of freely roaming ponies, sparkling streams, rocky hills and charming secluded villages, many with welcoming inns and tea rooms.
